Book Review: The Lure of Shapinsay

The Lure of ShapinsayThe Lure of Shapinsay

Description:

Ever since Kait Swanney could remember, the old crones of the village have been warning her to stay away from the selkies. They claim that like sirens of old, the seal men creep from the inky waters, shed their skins, and entice women to their deaths beneath the North Sea. But avoiding an encounter becomes impossible when Kait is spotted at the water’s edge, moments after the murder of a half-selkie infant.

Unexpectedly, Kait is awoken by a beautiful, naked selkie man seeking revenge. After she declares her innocence, the intruder darts into the night, but not before inadvertently bewitching her with an overpowering lure.

Kait obsesses over a reunion deep beneath the bay and risks her own life to be reunited with her selkie. But when she lands the dangerous lover, the chaos that follows leaves Kait little time to wonder—is it love setting her on fire or has she simply been lured?

Title: The Lure of Shapinsay
Author: Krista Holle
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Fantasy, Romance
Self Published, December 16th 2011

Note: Contains spoilers, sorry!

When Holle contacted me about her book and invited me to review it, I read the first two chapters of this book that she posted on her blog. I was curious. Selkie? I’ve never read anything on that before, I didn’t even know that word existed until Wiki told me that Selkies are “mythological creatures which can shed their skin from seals to become humans.” The skin you see on the book cover is not really accurate. I was confused at how the skin could “wrap around” and keep its owner warm when it was just… it seemed like a hand towel. Anyway, readers should google “The Selkie Folk of Orkney Folklore” to see a more convincing image of the Selkie skin.

The Lure of Shapinsay is a unique story of love that keeps you reading till the end. Kait is a stubborn girl who is unafraid of confessing her love for Eamon, and Eamon is a selkie who simply cannot resist his attraction for Kait.

It was difficult for me to get through the first chapter, even though I’ve read it before on Krista’s (The Author) blog. After I’d gotten used to the language, the story flowed smoothly and became really enjoyable. Love between a human and any mythological creatures has always been difficult, and the same goes for this book. Kait was determined to gain the love of Eamon; she had fallen so deeply in love that she claimed she’d go “mad” without him. She would swim far, even risk her life, just for a chance to see him again. I find her brave enough to call out for her lover when she stumbled upon a group of Selkies. The story introduced Selkies to be really nasty. Kait was forceful, and desperate, it was something like… “I want that boy and nothing will stop me”.

Although up till now I’m still confused why the “lure” didn’t affect Kait (or did it?), I recommend this book to anyone interested in reading paranormal romance. It is not the best, but certainly a worthy read. I liked it.

“—and I’d not be returning to the sea. Ever.”

After reading the entire book, I believe this is the sweetest thing I’ve heard from Eamon.

My favorite part of the book was when Eamon grew weak on land, because I was expecting a twist and heartbreaking scenes. The least favorite part of the book was when everything was solved just by a skin. I was hungry for more.

Honestly, I do not like the idea of this book having an “end” to it yet. I long for a continuation of the story. There’re still so much more to be told. I wanted to read more about the history of Selkies. I wanted to know what Eamon was talking about when he mentioned that Kait reminded him of someone, and from my memory, this part was only briefly touched on. I wanted to know what it felt like actually living in the sea. I wanted to know what would happen to the “old” woman selkie. I wanted to know if there was a story for the “old” woman selkie and her lover that’s still waiting for her in the sea. Would he come for her when Kait finds him? How would Kait get along with other Selkies? What would her brother’s reaction be? Why wasn’t she affected by the lure?

I’d vote for a book 2 if I could.

P.s. Sshh… I secretly wished there was a map to visualize Shapinsay and the areas around it.

I give this book a rating of 4/5.

Title: The Darkest Night
Series: Lords of the Underworld #1
Author: Gena Showalter
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Fantasy, Supernatural, Young Adult
Published May 1st 2008 by HQN Books

Loved the cover. Grabbed the whole of Showalter’s book series just because the covers looked hot. It still does, and I’m glad I stumbled upon this author for paranormal romance books. It doesn’t mean that I’m more prone to giving positive reviews though, but catching my eye has already earned a score.

Anyway, although Showalter did put effort in the introduction, I felt that it wasn’t explained enough, and I still feel so. Perhaps more about Pandora should be explained. Why would Zeus punish Maddox over killing Pandora? She wasn’t his first kill, and nothing was done before that. It was just when it comes to Pandora, then Zeus became … What? Mad over the woman’s death? More into the history would explain a lot to the readers. Why was Pandora chosen over the warriors? Were they really that poor in their skills? Okay, so even if Pandora was chosen over them, they’re supposed to be elite warriors, ummm really cool ones, not a bunch of sore losers. Since Showalter decided to change the well-known story of Pandora, it then became not-so-well-known anymore, and because of that, more details and a lengthy introduction would be really helpful.

I understand that this book is about Maddox and Ashlyn. So more should be written about him, should it not? In fact, I feel that the story ended too quickly. I was screaming for MORE because I felt like I didn’t quite understand Ashlyn yet. Maddox has pretty defining words and adjectives, but that’s all I know. I can’t really give any suggestion for this, for I’m not a writer myself, but if I say that something is lacking and couldn’t understand Maddox or Ashlyn very well, then it is. In fact, it felt like Showalter was struggling to describe and define how ‘Violence’ would act like. Was a nice attempt though, if it’s true.

“A muscle ticked below his eye.”

This is Showalter’s favorite line, I dare say. Some say you feel what you read; I couldn’t agree more. I don’t know how many times I’ve ticked mine. Not from this book alone, but after reading almost all of Showalter’s books.

“While you had barbells within your reach? Please. I’m Disease, not Stupid.”

Loved this line. Disease has got a sense of humor, I see. I so want to read this warrior’s version in the series.

“But—but…” She couldn’t allow him to send her away. She needed him. Yes, she’d only just met him. Yes, the only things she knew about him were his name and the fact that he threw daggers with expert precision. But she was already horrified at the thought of losing the silence. “I want to stay with you.” She knew desperation seeped from her, but she didn’t care. “Please. Just for a little while. Until I learn how to control the voices myself.”

Like I said, so much more could be written. Just… These many pages wasn’t enough. Why would the girl prefer the silence to stop and not her safety? I know she’s suffered from having this unique ability of hers, but seriously, to prefer death over it is absurd, especially what she’d been trying to do is survive (till now). If I’m guessing correctly from the author’s point view, the reader is supposed to know that this is the ‘pull of mates’ or what do they call it… Oh, the “strong unknown attraction between mates etc etc”. She’s suppose to feel safe with Maddox (I think). So write more on it. Don’t leave me guessing from my experience in reading paranormal romance stories. Imagine if this was the first time in reading a book like this. I’d not have understood this ‘love’ thingy going on.

“My Maddox is dead.”

“Your Maddox?” Something fiery flickered in his eyes. “Yours?”

Ooh. A possessive delight from Maddox. I love this kind of interaction.

“They were connected. He was hers.”

Again, give me more. Seriously, I’m still hungry for more content.

“What about breathing?” she asked dryly. “Can I do that?”
“His lips twitched, smoothing the edges of his fierceness. “If you do it quietly.”

Now, this is different from that of ‘The Nymph King‘, same question, different reply. A highlighted score, I must say.

And here are the last three quotes:

“My room,” he finally said, his tone so dark they couldn’t mistake his unspoken warning: Visit her and feel the sting of my demon .”

“You left her alone in your room?” Aeron’s exasperation reached a new high, and he threw his arms in the air. “Why don’t you give her a knife, tell us to line up and let her stab us one by one?”

“Just call me yours. That is all I want to be.”

Before I end this review, here’s a last one:

“Boneless, she lay on his chest.”

Oh dear life of mine, I do not know what to say for this one.

Anyway, this is a typical paranormal romance book, what I read was a love story between two very helpless people, which was very well written and portrayed. The interaction was good, the storyline was interesting, and it’s perfectly my type of book. Leaves me hungry for more and curious of what other demons would get for their lovers.

I give it a 4/5.

Title: The Nymph King
Series: Atlantis #3
Author: Gena Showalter
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Fantasy, Supernatural, Young Adult
Published February 1st 2007 by HQN Books

It was the first fiction book I picked in year 2011 (yes, I haven’t read a book for almost a year), and it reminded me of how much I’d fallen in love with paranormal romance since young until this heavy school workload curses came falling upon me as I grow. Now I’m back. Falling in love with these stories again, from these amazing authors that have the “powers” to make me secretly crave for more of these oh-so-hot stories.

I am so glad I stumbled upon Gena Showalter. Her books are honestly, my type of books. Perhaps that’s the reason why I picked this book and broke my almost one year curse of not reading fiction.

The Nymph King screams of sensuality. That’s how he was described nearly everywhere in the book. He didn’t have to do anything. He just had to… exist. Ah, yes that’s the word. Exist. Shaye seems to be the only one who can resist him, not affected by his arrogant beauty. The almighty my-body-is-here guy pleasing her in ever way and she says no.

“Did you dream of me?” he asked.

“Yes,” she admitted grudgingly. She had. She’d dreamed of his hands caressing her, of his mouth devouring her.

His lush lips inched into a surprised but pleased smile.

“You were naked,” she told him.

His grin spread; his eyes gleamed with satisfaction.

“And tied up…”

He arched his eye brows in smug expectation. “I did not know the idea of bondage would please you.”

“Oh, I love the idea of typing you up.” She paused dramatically. “Just like in my dream, you’ll be secured to an ant-hill and the little things will eat you alive.”

I like her attitude.

After reading around 80 per cent of the book, she suddenly gives in. I know it gets kinda draggy when someone keeps saying no to an obvious love from a guy described to be that sensual, but I was hoping to have more. Shaye certainly has a strong character to resist a nymph’s touch, but … if there could be perhaps, something more into the story, when she finally accepted his love.

Since I chose to pick the third book out of the Atlantis series, there are some points in which I didn’t quite understand, like parts on the dragon and the vampire. So… I’ll be starting from book #1 of the Atlantis Series after this review.

Loved this book, has interesting content, and deserves a 4.5 / 5.
